In Which Eme Does Useless Things

So I am a big fan of Avatar: the Last Airbender. One of my favorite episodes is the one where Aang goes to the guru to unlock his chakras. I always found it to be a very neat and introspective episode that explained a lot about Aang's state of mind, conduct and personality in a very unique way.

Way back when I use to play Winry over at [community profile] soul_campaign I really had a hankering for her to undergo something similar since there was a period in which she had just lost complete direction of who she was, and who she wanted to be. Unfortunately I could never really find a way to make it work ICly, and I find myself in a similar position with Nepeta now at [community profile] witchesreign. This mostly came back to me when I saw a tumblr post which contained all of them. I figure the one way I can examine each of them and how they apply to Nepeta, is simply to make an OOC post about it. This way, there can also be a post that describes the changes she has undergone since I am always worried she may be considered OOC because of my own interpretations of her character, and because of the changes she has undergone over the course of the game that others may not have witnessed.

So yes! I guess I am making this a meme of sorts. It will likely be long and rambly and full of typos to please bear with me, but lets get started, yea? I will be editing this bit by bit.

Insight vs. Illusion. How does Nepeta stack up? In fandom, I have generally seen Nepeta depicted as nothing more than the dumb, shippy, fangirly girl who can't function outside of Equius. She is often called the most childish of the trolls, but really, I do not see her as anymore or less childish than all the others. In truth, I would probably consider Vriska the most childish of the lot, but that's for another time.

I think the reason fandom generally tends to depict her this way are for the following:

► 1. She is probably the character with the least amount of screentime. Heck, even background characters like Dad have had more screen time than she has. We may not have had any pesterlogs with him, but we've seen enough of his notes, and enough of his actions. Because of this, we are mostly left only with first impressions of her.

► 2. Yes, she is an optimistic and very cutesy character. Many of her traits fall into the 'genki' or 'moe categories, and with the former people tend to just slap on stupid and immature labels.

► 3. Her roleplaying and puns. The puns, I don't know why they count since she is hardly the only one who does them, and it's just another gimmick--something all the characters have. As for the roleplaying and her insistence on it, it's not something she does all the time. As mentioned in the first point, we see it in the first couple pesterlogs she has and that's what sticks. Yet she definitely is capable of having conversations without inserting that. It's something she enjoys, and that she doesn't particularly care that other people think its stupid shows that she understands she has to do somethings for herself, and that she is happy being who she is. This no longer applies to WR Nepeta, exactly, but I felt it needed to be said to show that her habit of roleplaying isn't something I feel makes her stupid or immature.

► 4. How she lets Equius push her around. This is definitely something I would have agreed with, but their relationship has changed a lot from the beginning of the troll session where we saw him push her into joining the Blue team, and when they finished it. In the first flash game we know she no longer listens his every single since she goes and speaks/roleplays with the human despite his orders. Heck. If she actually had listened to his orders more, still, she probably would still be alive right now.

► 5. Her obsession with cute things. Yea, I'll give. Not the height of maturity there, but neither is Karkat's neverending cursing, Equius' obsession with the hemospectrum, or Terezi's obsession with "justice", Dave's cool pretense, or any other number of qualities displayed by the other characters. It just seems that people isolate Nepeta's downfalls because the ones of the other characters are funny or make them more interesting, but in the end they are still just that.

Some consider Homestuck a coming of age story. Whether this is true or not, SBURB/SGRUB at least is suppose to be very unique to each player. That is part of the reason why each character has their own title with their own role to fulfill. All the characters, I feel, are rather precocious for their age but in the end they are still 13 years old with a lot of growing to do, each in their own way. This is, in part, what may determine the role they are given.

So in short, I will reiterate what I said before. She is no more or less mature / intelligent than the other characters. So now, how exactly can she be considered insightful?
